Summer Loving With Inside Out Magazine

By on 23-01-2014 in Get the Look, Inspired By

Inside Out have just recently dropped their Jan/Feb issue, and let me tell you it’s all things bright and summery … its the perfect thing to warm us up during this icy weather we’ve been experiencing over the past week. Fingers crossed it heats up for the Australia Day long weekend! Special mention to the feature ‘Home Grown’ styled by one of my favourites, Jason Grant, and photographed by Sam McAdam-Cooper. This lovely little feature represents eco-friendly furniture and homewares in the Australian design industry, while providing a Valentine’s inspired story for the upcoming romantic holiday. The most noticeable trend for this year is all things colour … bright painted walls, geometric cushions, pastel stoneware, paint dipped stools, the list goes on. I know the deal breaker for me was definitely visiting The Open House by the Design Files team late last year. I’ve gone from a black and white fanatic to loving anything pastel or brightly coloured, especially after seeing the beautiful salmon pink they slapped on the children’s bedroom … just brilliant!

In the image above you can’t help but feel like you’ve just stepped off the beach and into a seaside house on a warm summer’s day. The look is casual, contemporary, a little retro and we can see a subtle Scandinavian influence in the design of the coffee table and stool. The aerial photograph of Bondi beach on an obviously busy weekend is by Aquabumps, a website started by Eugene Tan. Aquabumps is a website and daily email dedicated to early morning beach life. Aquabumps depicts images of waves, surfers (good and bad), swimmers, sunrises and whatever happens in the wee hours down the beach every weekday.

Also in the Inside Out ‘Made With Care’ issue is the feature ‘Best Buys: Beach Towels’ (as seen in the image above). It’s styled by Jessica Hansen and photographed by Guy Bailey and provides “Colourful ways to park a spot on the beach and dry off”. If you’re looking for a bright and colourful beach towel, some great places to check out are Gorman (their homewares range was released a few months ago), Country Road and Missoni. Missoni beach towels are covered in their signature zig zag print in an assortment of lovely colours. You can pick them up at Spence & Lyda and Myer department stores.

Heather Nette King shows us how to take full advantage of sun-soaked days and balmy evenings with all-day outdoor entertaining. She explains its all about confidence; ‘With an outdoor area, you can afford to go bold, bright and beautiful. Bring a dash of daring to the table and go a little wild with your palette – vivid pinks and yellows will give your garden a summer vibe all year-round.’ She also notes that this summer it’s all about the pineapple. Play around with this cute motif on everything from cushions to tablecloths and lampshades. Also this summer, try portable tables and matching stools, and wicker, throws and cushions for a bohemian look.
