Retro Style Home

Modern Findings is a blog that devoted to all things mid-century modern design. The owner of this blog has the most stunning collection of retro style furnishings, and today we’ve featured his spectacular mid-century modern home. It’s almost as if we’ve gone back in time 30 or 40 years, if it wasn’t for the contemporary style kitchen! While a few of these pieces are quite expensive, don’t worry, if you’ve got a keen eye and patience, make sure to check out some flea-markets and antique stores, and you might just pick up a bargain! If you’re wanting to replicate the same look in your home, think tan leather, cedar wood, patterned rugs and angular accessories. The colour composition is in perfect harmony in this house, and is completely dependent on what room you’re in. Make sure to scroll down to the bottom of this page to find out how to ‘get the look’ in your home!

In the kitchen we find some lovely Charlotte Perriand ‘Les Arcs’ chairs, designed with Le Corbusier in the early 1960s. The thick chocolate brown leather upholstery on these chairs develop a very beautiful patina with age. They possess a great classic style, and can be used as nice dining, side or desk chairs. These ones have come all the way from a gallery in Lausanne, Switzerland. The vintage re-print scroll of a domestic cat chart has replaced a framed poster, and the owner has also added in a large cow hide rug and angular glass terrarium into the composition. Definitely a full on retro look in this room!

The kitchen is probably the most contemporary room in this home. The owner has opted for a very minimalist and white look, with a mahogany bench, silver equipment and yellow highlights. In the kitchen we find white subway tiles for the backsplash, which according to the owner are quite inexpensive. He prefers ‘the more subtle less flashy designs’ for backsplashes, rather than making it the main attraction of the kitchen. And I agree, I think it’s best to keep bathrooms and kitchen’s in a relatively simple and classic design. The hanging yellow pendants are the favourites from me in this space.

And here we have the bedroom, an intimate and warm space with plenty of colourful patterned furnishings! Because of architectural reasons, there’s a little nook on the right side of the bedroom, so the owner decided to put a functional string shelving system in this corner to act as a small office space, and to also store items and display accessories. The large white bedside lamps are George Nelson wall sconces from Modernica, which give off a glowing cozy light at night. The tan leather armchair and kilim rug offer a lovely little reading spot, with the added comfort of the white shearling rug. Just perfect!
